How It All Started?

I’m Kaajal Tiwary, the founder and president of Diesel’s FootPrint. If you’ve found your way here, I imagine you’re either an animal lover or someone who knows the unique heartbreak of watching a beloved pet struggle with chronic illness. Either way—thank you for being here.

Diesel’s FootPrint was born from a deeply personal place. It’s a story of love, heartbreak, resilience, and the quiet strength required to show up—day after day—for a dog who needed me as much as I needed him.

Diesel’s Story

Dear Friend,

Diesel came into my life at just five days old while I was volunteering at the San Jose City Shelter. He was tiny and fragile, and after countless sleepless nights bottle-feeding him, he already felt like family — there was never a question he was staying with me.

Before his first birthday, Diesel was diagnosed with Addison’s disease. More diagnoses followed, each bringing new challenges and lessons in patience, care, and hope. Together we managed complex treatments, endless vet visits, and the daily balance of keeping him healthy and happy.

Diesel’s life ended from an anesthetic error. After years of caring for him so closely, losing him suddenly and without a goodbye broke my heart. That grief became the reason Diesel’s FootPrint was born.

Diesel’s FootPrint honors his life and spirit by supporting pet parents facing the same impossible choices — the worry, the sleepless nights, the decisions that can feel heavier than life. I know the weight of those moments and the love that makes it worth it. This nonprofit carries that bond forward, offering compassion, guidance, and hope for those navigating long-term veterinary care.

Buffy’s Story

Dear Friend,

I found myself in the world of caregiving when my two-year-old child was diagnosed with a medical condition that required round-the-clock support. Overnight, I became the person who had to manage appointments, advocate with providers, and care for my child 24/7, all while holding it together emotionally and financially.

In the middle of that, there was Buffy, the Labrador Retriever I had raised since he was eight weeks old. Over time, Buffy developed chronic digestive issues that were difficult to manage. His test results often came back “normal,” even when it was obvious he wasn’t feeling well. So on top of caring for my child, I was also navigating ongoing, often confusing medical care for my dog.

Long-term caregiving for a child, a pet, a parent — any being who fully depends on you — can be isolating, exhausting, and financially draining. The Buffy Fund is an initiative dedicated to supporting low-income caregivers who are managing ongoing medical or behavioral challenges with their pets. It exists to make sure caregivers get the emotional and community support they need as they navigate the stress, uncertainty, and isolation that come with caring for an animal with ongoing needs.

It is here to remind every caregiver of this: you are not alone, and you deserve care, too.
